Setting Google as your browser homepage allows you to access search instantly every time you open your browser. With just a few simple steps, you can make Google your default start page and streamline your browsing experience.
How to set Google as your homepage
To make Google your homepage, open your browser settings (for example, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge) and enter https://www.google.de as the homepage. In Chrome, enable the Home button under “Appearance” and add the Google address there. You can also set Google as the default homepage in Firefox, Safari (Mac), and Edge via their respective homepage or general settings.
The homepage is the entry point to the web for many people — often the start of the day. When you open your browser, the homepage is the first thing you see. There are many options: a news site, your email provider, or your employer’s intranet — but the search engine Google is probably the most popular. For SEOs in particular, Google is useful because search results for certain keywords need to be checked frequently, or Google is used for research. Below, we show how to set Google as your homepage.
Set Google as the homepage in Chrome
Want to make Google the homepage in Google Chrome? It’s actually pretty simple.
Follow this step‑by‑step guide:
- Launch Chrome and click the three‑dot menu icon in the upper-right corner next to your profile picture.
- Scroll down a bit and select “Settings.”
- In the left menu, click “Appearance.”
- Enable the switch for “Show Home button.” A field will appear below.
- Click the second option and enter the web address you want — in this case, https://www.google.de. From now on, the familiar Google search bar will greet you each time you open Google Chrome or start a new Chrome window.
Google as the homepage on Android phones
Want to see the Google search when you launch the Chrome app on your Apple or Android smartphone or tablet?
Here’s what to do:
- On Android: Open the Chrome app, go to the settings menu, choose “Advanced,” then tap “Homepage” and enter the Google address in the field provided.
- On iOS (iPhone/iPad): In the Google Chrome app, tap the three‑dot menu in the bottom navigation bar, go to “Settings,” choose “Search engine,” and select “Google” from the dropdown list.
Set Google as the homepage in Firefox
Mozilla Firefox is one of the most popular browsers and typically has the second largest market share after Chrome.
Setting Google as your homepage in Firefox is similar to Chrome:
- Open Firefox and click the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the top right.
- Tap “Settings” > “Home.”
- In the dropdown next to “Homepage and new windows,” select “Custom URLs.”
- Choose that option and enter the Google URL.
- When you close and reopen Firefox, you’ll see the colorful Google logo. Note: unlike Chrome, Firefox won’t automatically show Google when you open a new tab — only when you open the homepage or a new window.
Set Google as the homepage in Apple Safari
On a Mac, set the new homepage as follows:
- With Safari open, move your mouse to the top of the screen to reveal the menu bar.
- Select “Safari” > “Preferences” > “General,” then set “New windows open with” to “Homepage.”
- In the “Homepage” field, enter the Google URL.
- After you close the preferences, you’ll be asked to confirm. You can also set “New tabs open with” to “Same Page” so new tabs also start with the Google search.
Set Google as the homepage in Microsoft Edge
Change the homepage in the Edge browser as follows:
- In Edge, click the three‑dot menu in the upper right.
- Choose “Settings” > “General.”
- Enable the toggle for “Show home button” and under “Open this page” (or “Specific page”) enter the Google URL.
- If you were wondering about Internet Explorer, it was discontinued in 2022 and replaced by Microsoft Edge.
